Norwich Peregrines Nest Activity Log- 02/06/20

08:57 - I've logged on just in time to see the tiercel arrive, carrying prey. A couple of the chicks grab the food offered hungrily to begin with but enthusiasm soon wanes. The tiercel takes the prey item on the front edge, where he sits with it for a while, occasionally looking up at the spire calling. The chicks gaze disinterestedly beyond the box.

09:00 - The tiercel leaves with most of the prey uneaten. The chicks sit quietly. They begin to preen. They are almost completely feathered now, just a few pieces of down persistently clinging on.

09:06 - The chicks pick at pieces of leftovers in the box. If they're hungry, it's hard to explain their disinterest earlier.

09:10 - The chicks begin calling in unison and suddenly the tiercel returns with the prey. A wrestling match over ownership of the prey ensues. One of the female chicks prevails and takes its prize to the far end of the box where it tucks in. The other three are very well behaved, no disagreements or upset, they sit quietly and gaze out of the box.

09:23 - The chicks are sitting quietly, watching something fly past the box.

09:33 - One of the chicks is lying at the far end of the box, possibly the one that was feeding. The other three sit at the near end of the box preening.

09:51 - The chick nearest the camera, TC, calls excitedly at something beyond the box.

09:53 - The chick third from camera stands up and exercises its wings, whacking its neighbour over the head in the process. This chick, second from camera, gets up and relocates to the NE corner of the box. The wing exercising chick comes over to join TC at the near end of the box.

10:02 - TD, the chick that went into the NE corner of the box, comes over to join the two chicks by the camera. A spindrift of down floats about  the box as they preen together.

10:12 - TD engages in some vigorous wing-flapping which causes a blizzard of down to erupt around the box.

10:15 - Now just TC remains upright, the other three lying in the shade at the front of the box.

10:27 - Finally, TC allows himself a break and lies down next to one of his sisters. Two chicks are in the SE corner, two in the SW.

10:31 - Break time doesn't last long for TC, though. He's soon up fidgeting, wing-flapping and running around the box. He finds some scraps to peck at.

10:39 - TC flaps himself into his sisters at the far end of the box. They complain to him vocally.

10:40 - Now TC flaps himself into the sister in the near corner. In the space of a minute, he's woken everyone up! Well done TC, how to make yourself popular! The four chicks stand in a row at the front of the box.

10:43 - Suddenly, TC is on the front edge of the box! He flaps vigorously, skittering up and down the ledge. At one point he flaps himself into the box, before jumping back onto the edge.

10:47 - TC remains on the edge, although the flapping has ceased for the time being.

10:48 - Wing-flapping on the edge recommences.

11:00 - And so, as Sarah takes over, TC remains on the edge of the box, being watched by his sisters.

11.05 TC the daredevil chick sitting on the ledge of the box.

11.09 Projectile poo just missed a sibling.

11.10 3 chicks huddled around TC, still on the ledge, one preens one of TC’s talons.

11.21 TC on the ledge looking all around.

11.26 TC steps back in the box.

11.32 All chicks walking up and down and flapping wings.

11.34 Projectile poo over the box this time!

11.38 1 chick looking up near the camera and calling - TD I believe.  Another chick on the box ledge- TC I think.

11.42 All chicks looking around.

11.48 TC still on the ledge.

12.04 1  chick calling.

12.10 TC back in the box.

12.20 3 chicks sleeping, 1 chick preening.

12.31 2 chicks awake and on lookout.

12.46 1 chick chewing the remains of prey.

12.50 Much wing flapping.

12.55 1 chick on the ledge again.

As I take over there are 4 active chicks. TC standing rather precariously on the ledge on the far corner with 3 wide awake sisters looking around expectantly.

13.10 TC is preening himself still up on the ledge - I do hope he can continue to balance and do this at the same time!

13.14 TC finally jumps back into the box

13.15 deafening calls from all 4 chicks

13.45 TD actively preening but other 3 settled down to sleep

14.00 all 4 settled down

14.20 2 awake and preening

14.45 all 4 awake and calling TC back on ledge and then jumped back in after 3 mins

14.50 TA wing flapping strongly from the centre of the box.

14.58 All juveniles looking upwards as if one of the adults is on the spire - no sign of one.

15.00 TC flops down in the far left corner.

15.05 All are now lying down

15.21 More calling from the 4 hungry juveniles- all from a lying down position

15.29 All at the alert now, looking up expectantly, one hops up onto the ledge

15.34 Finally a feed.....
Pretty frenetic feeding from the adult who is surrounded by the 4 youngsters. It’s hard to see if it’s the male or female- buffering when the adult arrived. It looks to be the male.

15.41 The adult leaves . Lots of fresh  food debris left scattered around the box & they are all having a bite of something- pulling it apart between them

15.56 TA is still pecking away at some debris
TC hops down from the ledge to carry on with  TA‘s leftovers

16.18 All bar one chick are lying down again

16.38 All resting now

16.53 TA up & about again
