Norwich Peregrines Nest Activity Log- 14/05/20

Weather: Cool and overcast

08.33 –  The tiercel arrives with food for the chicks.

09.02 – After a very long feed, the male hops up onto the southeast side of the nest box.

09.15 – He’s still on the rim of the platform, alternating between napping and preening, while the young jostle in the opposite corner.

10.00 – No change for now, all looking fairly settled.

10.15 Tiercel flies off.

10.46 Chick flapping its wings

10.55 Chicks are alone

11:00 - The chicks are gathered at the far North-Eastern end of the box, dozing, the remnants of their previous meal strewn around them.

11:04 - GA arrives carrying prey to complete indifference from the chicks. Perhaps they're still digesting their earlier feed? Eventually one perks up and is fed by its mother. The other three remain slumbering.

11:06 - Eventually the other three chicks realise what's happening and sit up. However, they are not actively begging, just watching their sibling being fed. One nibbles half-heartedly at a feather.

11:07 - Finally one of the other chicks begs and is fed. It receives an enormous chunk, far too big. GA takes it and tears it into smaller pieces.

11:08 - One of the two unfed chicks at the back forces its way forward and receives some food.

11:09 - Another enormous chunk is presented to the chick at the front. It too struggles and has it taken away and is fed smaller pieces.

11:13 - One of the chicks receives a leg and nibbles at what is effectively the drumstick.

11:16 - One of the chicks at the back has shown no interest in being fed and remains sprawled, ignoring food and siblings. It could, of course, be the check that was fed the most a couple of hours ago and is simply not yet hungry.

11:17 - One of the chicks wanders over to the near side (Western) end of the box.

11:21 - Feeding time is over and GA removes the carcass from the box. The chicks watch her go. They settle into their down-pile formation to digest their meal.

11:26 - There is now a slumbering heap of down in the corner.

11:48 - The chicks liven up a little, have a preen and a look around but soon settle again.

11:52 - The chicks appear more restless currently, shuffling and preening but remain huddled in their corner. Soon, however, they have settled into their slumbering mound.

12:07 - GA arrives in the box, empty-taloned, as it were, and walks over to her chicks. She picks up a discarded leg and foot and attempts to extract some meat from it. The chicks watch her but haven't got up or started begging. Eventually GA gives up on the leg and gives it whole to a chick who attempts to swallow it. GA pecks at more of the remnants lying around the box.

12:09 - Eventually she pulls a morsel free and feeds the chick at the back.

12:10 - She has another go with the foot, tears a slither of meat free and again feeds the chick at the back. The ones at the front have hardly woken up, never mind begged for any food. They must still be full from the last feed.

12:13 - GA walks over to her chicks and looks as if she'd like to brood them but they are far too big now. Instead, she stands protectively over them.

12:17 - GA leaves the chicks to sit on the front of the box, where she looks out briefly over the Cathedral Close. Then she crouches and leaps towards the camera. I suspect that she is now sitting atop the camera! The chicks have gone back to sleep.

12:24 - The tiercel lands on the front of the box. He looks at his chicks, who have ignored him, and jumps in. Just off camera, GA can be heard calling to him. The male sets about eating some of the scraps left lying around in the box. This is probably an important piece of hygienic housecleaning. The chicks have taken no notice of any of this.

12:27 - The tiercel jumps up on to the western edge of the box nearest the camera where GA calls to him. He leaves. The chicks doze on.

13:00 - With the chicks just started to wake and preen it's time for Graham.

13.00, Taking over from Colin, chicks cuddled up in the corner.

13.27, Tiercel arrives, lands front right hand corner of the box, has a quick look up at the spire.

13.42, Tiercel getting restless, calling out, Looks up at the spire. Nothing occurred.

13.50,must be hungry.

14.05, Blinked!  he's gone, leaving the chicks all alone in the box.

14.09, all the chicks together in the far left corner of the box.

14.29, preening time for one of the chicks.

15.00, end of shift, very quiet 2 hours. Now handing over to James, with the chicks fast asleep in the corner.

15:00 The chicks are in a huddle at the far back corner of the box enjoying a rest and the sunny intervals.

15:13 One chick relieves itself.

15:22 Three chicks start preening themselves

15:26 One chick looks up spire intently

15:45 Tiercel arrives and possibly a glimpse of GA’s feet.  He sits on the ledge and the chicks call expectantly.

15:48 Tiercel starts to preen

15:48 Another chick relieves itself.

15:50 Tiercel jumps onto the camera stalk.  The shadow of his feathers flutter in the breeze

15:54 The chicks settle again.

16:02 Chicks call again.

16:11 There is some peregrine calling on the webcam ??who

16:16 A shadowy Tiercel talon appears as he preens on the camera stalk.

16:30 The chicks call again but are lying down.

16:34 Tiercel arrives with food, a wing and leg and some body, pale feathers like collared dove or gull, and starts to feed chicks.

16:36 The three bigger chicks appear at front with smaller one behind.

16:37 The fourth chick arrives and gets fed

16:40 GA arrives on ledge and calls loudly and leaves at 16:41

16:44 The closest chick has a huge full crop the size of a golf ball.

16:45 One chick staggers to camera side of box

16:46 Tiercel eats himself and plucks feathers that float out of the box.

16:49 All chicks are back together at far end of box and still take scraps from Tiercel including a feather

16:58 A chick is still taking food!

16:59 The Tiercel hops to ledge near camera and then onto camera stalk.

17:00 Chicks settle and all quiet. 25 minute feed!
