Norwich Cathedral Peregrines Activity Log 05/06/2019

What a fantastic day at the watch point! The remaining two chicks in the nest box are very close to fledging now and the adult peregrines have been trying to encourage them to take the leap of faith! The other chick YS was spotted today on the roof of the cathedral annex (after drifting down from the bell tower crenellations), giving visitors and photographers great views of her.

Weather was overcast with sunny spells and a breeze.

9.50 The fledged chick YS is on the South bell tower. GA is one crocket up on the North side of the nest box. L7 and YL are still in the nest.

9.55 GA leaves the spire to mob a buzzard! Male appears to help, and GA returns to the spire and lands 2 crockets down on the North East side. Male disappears.

10.48 GA hops around 1 crocket to the North East. YS calls out to the male as he drifts past her. He then lands next to her, trying to encourage her to fly.

11.10 GA leaves the spire while the male follows her.

11.30 GA reappears close to the spire to mob a gull, then lands on the North side.

11.38 GA flies off to the East.

12.34 GA returns and lands 2 crockets down on the East side.

12.49 GA moves to the North side.

13.00 GA and the male mob a buzzard close to the spire! GA then lands 2 crockets down on the East while the male disappears again.

13.10 GA flies around the cathedral, then off to the East.

13.45 L7 hops onto the nest box ledge and preens.

14.05 Both chicks are now on the box ledge, preening each other.

14.16 GA lands 2 crockets down on the East side.

14.33 The male returns to mob a buzzard, diving and striking the buzzard several times! The 2 chicks are now flapping on the ledge.

15.09 GA stoops from the spire and circles the cathedral close to the East, then flies off to the West.

15.35 GA lands on the 2nd crocket down. The chicks are still perched on the ledge.
