Norwich Cathedral Peregrines Activity Log 19/05/2019

Excellent day at the watch point, lots of action and intruders flying about including a red kite!

Weather was overcast with bright spells and drizzle in the afternoon.

9.30 GA is perched on West side of nest box window. The male takes off from middle window and makes contact with a gull! Then he lands 4 crockets down from plucking window. The chicks in the nest are restless, with the largest flapping its wings.

10.27 No change with the adults, the chicks are settled and resting.

10.46 Male circles spire several times, then lands 2 crockets down on the West.

10.52 The chicks preen themselves.

11.08 Both adults leave cathedral and fly off North East.

11.14 GA returns and lands 3 crockets down on the South East side.

11.16 Male returns with food to nest box and feeds chicks.

11.23 GA flies up and circles to the South East of the cathedral. The male joins her shortly after. He then returns and lands on the 2nd crocket down on the South side and GA flies off to the East.

11.51 GA returns and lands 3 crockets down on the South side. The male flies off to the North.

11.55 Male stoops on a gull and makes contact!

11.56 GA flies North East.

12.00 Both adults mob a buzzard to the South West, making contact. GA lands 1 crocket from the top.

12.02 Male lands on the golden bales. GA circles the spire and then flies off North East.

12.13 Male flies off South East.

12.17 GA returns with prey and lands on North side. GA then mobs a gull to the East.

12.20 GA lands on golden bales with her prey.

12.28 Male lands on 2nd crocket down.

12.45 GA flies off and mobs a gull to the North!

12.49 GA is mobbed by 5 gulls! She calls for the male, but he is unresponsive, preferring to preen himself, so she flies up and knocks him off his crocket! GA then takes his place on the crocket and the male tries to lead the gulls away to the East but 1 gull remains which GA attacks. Afterwards she lands beside the South West middle window. The male returns later and reclaims his crocket.

13.05 Both adults chase a buzzard, making contact. GA then returns to spire, then 3 buzzards and a red kite are spotted high up near the cathedral!

13.11 Male patrols the spire, then lands on the plucking window.

13.25 GA returns and lands 2 crockets below plucking window.

13.44 GA lands in nest box, stays for a minute then hops onto the ledge.

13.47 GA circles the spire and then lands on the West middle window.

14.40 GA lands on the nest box ledge again, and then hops onto the camera!

15.00 No change.

15.20 Male disappears.

15.26 Male returns, lands on the golden bales and starts plucking prey.

15.28 GA flies East and mobs 3 gulls.

15.39 GA returns with prey, then lands on the golden bales. Both adults then fly up and the male passes the food he was plucking to GA. She then flies off to the North West.

15.42 Male returns and lands 3 crockets down from the plucking window. GA returns to the North side of the golden bales and plucks her prey.

15.57 Male flies East.

16.00 GA lands in nest box with food and feeds the chicks.
