Sculthorpe Videos Showcase Reserves Latest Projects!

The completion of a new office building is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to…

Last week Chris Sperring, Conservation Officer at the Hawk and Owl Trust, published a live video on the Trust’s Facebook page from the Shapwick Moor Reserve.

Chris highlights the current offerings from this beautiful reserve, which are plenty during this transitional time between seasons! Wintering birds are plentiful and include Redwings, Wintering Blackbirds, and Fieldfares to name a few. Starlings must not be forgotten as the reserve is clearly a favourite spot of theirs! The murmurations of these birds are most impressive, and will likely stop you in your tracks if you are lucky enough to see one!

Water Voles can be readily spotted with a keen eye over the bridged ditch, and consequently one may spot Barn Owls, and possibly Small Owls hunting along the water's edge.

With the throng of wintering birds and hoards of Starlings, visitors will likely see birds of prey during their visit. Shapwick are lucky enough to have sightings of Common Buzzards, Marsh Harriers, Hen Harriers, and even Merlins!

The Shapwick Moor Reserve remains open to the public, but with no access to the hides. As you can see from the footage the reserve has plenty to offer despite the hides being closed! If the beautiful aspect of the National Trust's Glastonbury Tor isn’t enough then the impressive offering of birds of prey and wintering birds will hopefully tempt you out into the fresh air at the reserve!

Keep your ears out for Chris on BBC local radio next week (Tuesday 24/11/20) at 6.30 am as he discusses the Hawk and Owl Trust, the work we do, who we work with and how you can get involved with our Adopt a Box scheme.
