Local Groups

Local Groups – your chance to get more involved locally...

There are several local groups representing the Hawk and Owl Trust and they give an opportunity for members to get together to help fulfil the conservation objectives of the Trust, to learn more about birds of prey and related subjects, and to meet with like-minded enthusiasts. And they are great fun as well.
Groups develop their own programmes, from regular evening talks to outings to observe wildlife, and they offer active volunteer conservation work, from habitat improvement to nest box installation and opportunities to go out monitoring nest boxes by helping licensed ornithologists.

All group events are included on our events list HERE

If you have been a Trust member for at least six months and would like to start a new local group, please call our main office on 01328 850 590 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we will be delighted to discuss this with you.

Bath and West Wiltshire Group

The Bath and West Wiltshire group was formed over 20 years ago and provides advice on conservation, nest box construction, installation and maintenance as well as monitoring owls and other birds of prey around Bath and West Wiltshire.
The group is active at a number of important raptor and owl sites in and around the city. Members record and forward nesting data to the British Trust for Ornithology and continue to liaise with landowners such as the National Trust, Wessex Water and local farmers to assist in conservation schemes.

East Midlands Group

The East Midlands Group was formed in April 2011. It particularly welcomes members from Leicestershire, Rutland and Northamptonshire, but anyone with PE or NG postcodes – from the Peterborough and Nottingham areas (or even Derby) who would like to be involved would be most welcome.

The group has chosen to focus on promoting the Trust’s aims through practical conservation work such as constructing and erecting nest boxes for Barn Owls, Kestrels, Little and Tawny Owls in suitable locations. The group also organises indoor talks or outdoor events at least every other month, in an effort to educate people about the remarkable birds of prey on their doorstep. Key raptors in the area are Red Kite and Osprey and the group is delighted to have raised enough money to donate to local projects helping both these birds.

North Somerset & Bristol Group

The group is active from Weston Super Mare to central Bristol, across towards the A38 and down to Junction 22 of the M5. This is not a fixed area, everyone is welcome to join the activities. Members frequently work with other local groups to co-ordinate conservation, monitoring and socialising.

Regular meetings are held from October until the group annual meeting in April. In summer the group exhibits at local agricultural shows, and local events or fetes, and arranges walks lead by members of the Trust. The group undertakes habitat management in conjunction with local landowners and contributes work parties for the Trust reserve at Shapwick Moor on the fourth Sunday each month, weather permitting. Current projects include hedge planting, ditch clearance, coppicing and surveying (birds, insects, plants and habitat). Volunteers meet at the new Shapwick Moor car park at 9.45am and stay as long as they can. Everyone is welcome and anyone with experience of gardening or heavier woodland working is particularly appreciated.

South Gloucestershire Group

The group is very active in and around the South Gloucestershire/North Bristol area with a busy programme of habitat management, nest box building, installation and monitoring. The group has set up a dedicated team of volunteers to manufacture, install and monitor nest boxes for Barn Owl, Little Owl, Tawny Owl and Kestrel. In addition, the group has a farm survey team which work with farmers and landowners on habitat creation and management. We also attend many shows and events throughout the year.
Our habitat management is carried out at Acton Court and dates are arranged for work parties on a fortnightly basis. Meet at Acton Court to start at 10.00am. Work for about one hour or so then have a quick cup of tea/coffee and be off home by 12.30pm or so.

South West Peregrine Group

South West Peregrine Group was formed in 2007 to continue the work of Richard (Dick) Treleaven (MBE) (1920 -2009), who had been studying the lives of Peregrines on the North Cornish Coast since the late 1940s. Dick was recognised as one of the foremost authorities on Peregrines and his extensive knowledge and infectious enthusiasm for the birds brought him into contact with many specialists all over the world. We are committed to the BTO’s Nest Record Scheme. The team is full of willing and enthusiastic volunteers, who put in many hours of work to collect this data around Cornish and Devon coastlines. Research into Peregrine behaviour forms an important part of our study and wherever possible this is shared via regular website updates and video postings.

We regularly exhibit at local and national events as well as being available to give talks to other groups and clubs. Educational visits to schools are available to book and have proven to be a rewarding experience to the children involved. We are pleased to be affiliated to the Hawk and Owl Trust and believe the partnering of the group to a national organisation is important in helping to preserve the Peregrine and other birds of prey for future generations.
